Care for injured VA employees
VA nurses, nursing assistants, technicians, housekeepers and support staff are federal employees covered by FECA. Patient handling and long shifts on your feet take a toll, and on-the-job injuries are handled through OWCP, not your health insurance.
Injury Federal Clinic treats VA employees and keeps your claim documented from the first visit onward.
Common injuries among VA staff
- Back and shoulder injuries from lifting, transferring and repositioning patients
- Neck and back strain from long shifts and awkward postures
- Slips, trips and falls in clinical areas
- Injuries from combative or unsteady patients
- Repetitive strain from computer and charting work
Workers' comp is separate from VA health care
As a VA employee, your work injury is a federal workers' compensation claim under FECA. That is separate from any veterans' benefits you may have personally.
Report the injury to your supervisor and your facility's workers' compensation office, file the right form (usually a CA-1 or CA-2), and choose your treating physician.
